We were assigned to utilize our visual research from Shoreditch and make the ideas link together in the design inspiration process. We can make references to any previous class tasks. We have the choice to design an accessory/ garment/ make-up for the demographic we have chosen from our London street style.
I struggled to look for ideas and link the research I did together. I believe the main reason for this is that I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of work we had to do. How we should consider a lot of points as a response to the ideas. I wasn’t impressed by the lack of imagination I have, it was hard for me to find and develop ideas. I have always needed quite some time in order to produce suitable ideas, or else, it usually just will be some ‘random’ ideas with no specific direction. Although I was quite satisfied with the drawing I did during the class, I don’t find them have enough details that clearly show something related to Shoreditch. In response to this, I am going to continue developing my ideas so they can have more of a Shoreditch side to them. I might want to ask for feedback from my classmates and teachers in order to improve. I also wasn’t able to link my design with my previous works, such as the USP and shoe design. They didn’t have the same style as my design, in fact, they are almost wholly different. One of my weaknesses is my lack of exploration, I am sometimes afraid to create something unique just because I think it would look peculiar to other people. I suppose the solution to this is just to try to illustrate what I have in mind because they might turn into something new. I may be able to merge my ideas into new ideas/designs that are unique. As we know, sometimes the prettiest things come from mistakes. But looking back, I have seen some improvements in myself. I am improving in terms of exploration and I am happy with this growth. Another thing is, my struggle always has something to do with drawing. I feel like I don’t have enough illustrating skills to express what I have in mind. This often hinders the process of my work/projects, making my progress slower than I thought. Being able to capture and draw will definitely be a big help to me. I will continue the practice to draw while learning techniques especially those related to fashion.
Since primary research involves original research and is collected first-hand, the ownership of the data is unique only to us. Only the researchers can have access to data, other people can’t use it without permission. We can also have complete control over the method used during the process. For instance, what items and angles do we want to take the pictures from in Shoreditch. Primary research allows us to have data that are completely relevant to us, it may be hard to look for Shoreditch art if we used secondary research. It is for sure that each of the students in the class will take different pictures from Shoreditch depending on what they find interesting, this makes each idea unique as we have different resources. I felt like somehow it is more ‘real’ to use primary research as a resource since I used pictures where I captured my real-world surroundings. I have my own memory and process behind every picture, this is what I feel makes it interesting rather than using secondary research. Though, secondary research is useful too. It feels like I have my own thoughts and ideas when taking those images, and I know that these things will only be unique to me. Because of this, everybody will have different outcomes for the designs.
