Toolbox Session 9

We had a fashion media task during this session, we have to decide how our product design will be styled and photographed for the media outcome. We have the option to make our own prop or find something similar to our product.

My customer segment mainly wears vintage secondhand but trendy items. As I don’t really have anything that has a vintage style, I borrowed my classmate’s plaid skirt and scarf. Though, I end up not using the scarf as I thought it was a bit too colorful and didn’t really match the style of my customer segment. The leather jacket that I wore for the photoshoot was a secondhand jacket that I bought from a car boot sale in London, whereas the pants and tank top are not. I had tried pairing the outfit with a tie, which I thought would look cute, but the color didn’t really match so I didn’t wear it. I also wore boots since it is the best match for the outfit from all the shoes I have. I made sure to choose an outfit that represents something that my customer would wear. Since I designed a bag, I made my own prop using cardboard as the main component, attaching paper on top of it which I colored the same way as I did in the previous class. I was satisfied with the prop as it looks almost the same as how I had drawn it.

I had chosen the images with the help of my teacher and then proceeded to edit them. I wanted to achieve a vintage look, so I started by editing them with Adobe Lightroom for the vintage filter, and Snapseed for a glowy effect. The pictures are a mix of both green and brown color the vintage look. I changed one picture from the board since I thought it doesn’t match the other pictures well. The main reason was that it was too green compared to the others. I used a ‘disposable camera’ preset on Lightroom and changed some of the settings so the filter fits my liking. Although I used a preset, I wouldn’t say that it was extremely easy, I had to alter each of them so they match the color of the images that I took. I try not to go overboard with the editing, as some of the examples shown in the class are very vibrant. I tried editing them with different elements and filters, vibrant ones like the examples just for experimentation but realized that it won’t match my customer segment so I went with simpler edits. I feel like it is great that I went through the process of thinking about how the pictures have to complement my chosen customers. Instead of editing it with random elements, I was careful about what filters to use and how they are edited.

I feel like I did a great job in terms of styling the outfit for the photo shoot, although if I had the option, I would have worn a more vintage top rather than a regular white tank top and also have more layers to the outfit if possible. However, I do feel like the outfit I was wearing is something my customer would feel comfortable in. Some of my friends said that they like my product, saying that they would wear it if it is sold. During the photoshoot session, I also asked for my partner’s opinion a few times, just to understand someone else’s point of view on the places and poses I chose to do and take pictures in. If I were to do another styling photoshoot, I’d explore more places and backgrounds. Because of this, I and my partner only mainly took photos in the inside area of the school, such as the courtyard and hallways, we didn’t really go to explore the surrounding of the school as we felt like we don’t really know any places. But we did end up going outside for a while. This time, there wasn’t any problem with my time management, I managed to finish taking the pictures in the time given. Compared to the last photoshoot session, I could say that I have improved. Last time, I spent too much time in one place and ended up with fewer options. In other words, I explored way more when compared to the previous styling session and I am happy with the growth.
